Start with the official earthquake report. Then use transportation, coastal and public cameras only to observe visible conditions within their limited view.
If shaking is occurring: Drop, Cover and Hold On. Never delay protective action to consult a camera or website. Near the coast, follow natural tsunami warning signs and local instructions.
A disciplined sequence
Check the event before checking the view
- Use USGS or the regional seismic network to identify the earthquake.
- Review ShakeMap for estimated shaking intensity and geographic extent.
- Check local emergency management and transportation agencies.
- Use a camera only for visible context such as congestion, debris, smoke, water or weather.
- For coastal events, check Tsunami.gov immediately.
